g to the d

on monday, i had my 24 week appointment with my nurse practitioner. it included the routine gestational diabetes test. i got to go to the lab, chug about 12oz of this syrupy orange drink (sort of like a mix of hi-c and flat pop). not so tasty. then i had an hour wait before the test, so i went up to my regular appointment. it was my first appointment since the fall, and although i knew baby was fine (because she moves around all the time!), it was nice to talk to the nancy about it. she reassured me by saying she has pregnant women come in who fell and broke their leg or got into a car accident and their babies are just fine. so i guess i can't complain about my bumps and bruises too much :)

at the end of my appointment, the lab technician came to the room and took some blood (for the diabetes test). she said if i fail the test, they will give me a call and i'll have to come back in a for a follow up (3 hour long!) test. if i pass, they will just send me a letter. i didn't hear anything on tuesday, so i thought i was in the clear. apparently not the case...a nurse called this morning to let me know that my results came back high (180 - which i'm pretty sure is really high- yikes!) and that i need to come back in for the lovely 3 hour follow up test. i was bummed, i really didn't expect to fail considering i'm not overweight, my weight gain has been on track, etc.

this doesn't necessarily mean that i have gestational diabetes. i read online that around 25% of women fail the first test and then out of those, only 15% go on to fail the second test, so the odds are in my favor. if i do have gestational diabetes, it's not the end of the world, but it probably means i will have to closely monitor what i eat, and my baby might be huge! so it's not fun either.

any mamas out there want to help put my mind at ease by telling me about their experience passing the second test with flying colors...or even having gd and everyone living happily ever after? :)

From an "old" mom---I have a family history of diabetes, so I wasn't surprised when I didn't pass the first test. But the second screening test came out fine. I know that it's difficult not to worry though!

One of my friends had gestational diabetes (I don't think she had any risk factors, either); both she and the baby got through it just fine, and it went away after the baby was born.

Thanks, guys! I'm trying not to worry about it too much. I know whatever the outcome, it should be easily manageable.

I have to do that at my next appointment! I'm hoping I don't have to do the longer test. Good luck. At least it wasn't 200. Babycenter.com said if you are over 200 they consider you diabetic.

I have a coworker who had gestational diabetes and it went away right after birth and her baby was just under 8 pounds so not huge at all! Good luck, I know it's hard not to worry, though.
