things have felt pretty surreal in minneapolis for the past week+. every time i open my phone, i'm bombarded by videos and images of ICE terrorizing our city. it feels like only a matter of time before i will witness it myself. it feels like we are living in nazi times right now. this is not about "criminals". women, children, and u.s. citizens are being threatened, beaten and detained without cause. ICE is operating above the law. how did we get to this point? it feels like a bad dream. i can't fathom how anyone can think this is okay. but plenty of people do. they voted for it. it's disturbing. how does someone rationalize de-humanizing people so much that they can tell themselves this is okay. it's un-christian and un-american. i'm thankful the city and state are suing the federal government to (hopefully) get these tyrannical monsters out as soon as possible. but yet life still goes on semi-normally for us...
last monday the kids went back to school. it's hard having big kids who know what's going on in our city and are feeling anxious about it. even though they are not being targeted by ICE, they have empathy for others who are being targeted, and they are scared of ICE showing up at their school and getting pepper sprayed or worse.
tuesday my friend bridget came over to see winnie (again) and to go out for lunch. we went to 'le burger' and had a nice catch up. azalea came home telling me that ICE was at the closest high school to hers today. i hate this!! ashford had zoom piano in the evening. puppy snuggles really help these days.
wednesday azalea reluctantly went off to school. ICE has not shown up at any of the middle schools so far, so ashford seems okay. azalea's friend sylvia came over after school for a couple hours. the kids love to put winnie on a bed and snuggle/play with her.
thursday winnie turned 4 months old (we've had her for just over 2 months now). since this blog is about the little things in life, as well as the big, i got a new kitchen rug at aldi yesterday that i'm in love with. :)
winnie has found a new favorite spot, under our leather chair, though i don't think she will fit for long. she's also getting bigger, smarter, and naughtier by the day. she's been escaping the yard again, so we're putting up more netting along the fence until she can't fit through the rails anymore. she keeps us on our toes for sure.
in the evening, we attended a holiday party for thatcher's new employer at 'punch bowl social'. it's a fun restaurant/bar with bowling, arcade games, etc. they had a huge spread of food for us and free activities. it was nice to meet some of his co-workers.
friday finally arrived and we were all mentally and physically exhausted. we made a lazy dinner and lounged around for the evening. it got really cold again. 10 degrees but 'felt like' -2.
saturday we didn't have any plans until the evening. i ran some errands and cleaned the house. we also gave winnie a bath which she tolerated pretty well. in the evening, our realtor sandy came for dinner with her husband. it was our first time meeting him. we were excited to show her what we've done with the house. as a bonus, her husband is a magician and did a bunch of tricks for us at the dining room table. so fun! we all loved it. we ended the night with winnie snuggles on the bed. we kept laughing at how fluffy her bangs were after the bath. she's the best!
sunday morning we slept in and made biscuits and eggs for breakfast. azalea's friend sylvia came over for the afternoon. in the evening, our family headed to my aunt cindy and uncle corey's house for the first winter 'sunday supper'. my cousins and their family were there too. we had a taco bar and hung out for a couple hours. it was really nice. it's going to be a monthly thing, at least for the winter.
now it's a holiday monday (mlk day) and it's -8 degrees outside. the kids are off school, though i have some work to do. we'll see what this week brings as far as ICE in our city.
