spring break: cabin with friends, a pesky cold, sports weekend

last monday morning the kids and i hit the road for ashford, wa. we got a last-minute invitation from vanessa for us to join their family, but thatcher needed to stay home and work. we missed him, but i'm so glad we could get out of town for a few days to break up the week with no school. the town of ashford is a little over 2 hours away near mount rainier and it's where we stayed over the new year as well.

we made it to the cabin with no issues. it's been years since i've taken the kids on a (road) trip by myself. the cabin was really nice and there was plenty of space for the 6 of us. shortly after we arrived, we went to coal creek inn for lunch (we went there for the first time back in december). we spent most of our time at the cabin eating, drinking, hot tubbing, watching tv/movies, playing video games (the kids), and reading. perfection!

we did venture out on tuesday to ashford county park. we walked a short 1-mile loop trail, but it started pouring shortly after we finished, so it was back to the cabin.

wednesday morning we went to mount rainier national park. it was the nicest weather day, but i neglected to see that the road in the park from longmire (low elevation) to paradise (high elevation) was closed on tuesdays and wednesdays, so we weren't able to go up to the snow. but it was still a beautiful area to explore with a little walk and a snack lunch.

thursday morning we packed up and cleaned the cabin. vanessa, matt, and ewan decided to go up to mount rainier again to see the snow, but we decided to just head home since we went there in december. we had a quick lunch stop at a wendy's on the way back, then we arrived home. i started feeling a little under the weather on thursday, so we pretty much just lounged around the rest of the day. we were happy to be back with thatcher again :)

friday morning confirmed i definitely have a cold. boo! pretty strange since no one felt sick at the cabin and we weren't really around any other people, but thatcher felt like he had a bit of a cold too when we got back. he had previously taken the day off to go to our property, so he headed out early. the kids and i spent the entire day at home except for both of them seeing friends outside out of the house for an hour. i finished my 19th book of the year and sat on the deck for a little bit, but most of the day was spent resting on the couch. we had hardly any food in the house and i didn't feel up to picking anything up, so i ordered pizza for dinner.

saturday morning we hung out at home and azalea and i walked to the library. ashford had to be at his baseball game at 11:30. he was playing his old team (well, sort of. same name and many of the same kids). they ended up losing 17-6, which was a huge bummer, but they play them again this week, so hopefully it will go better. :) it was a beautiful day to watch some baseball. the blooms at the field were amazing!

we relaxed at home the rest of the day. i read on the deck and the kids played video games. we made carne asada tacos for dinner and thatcher and i both felt crappy in the evening. :(

sunday was another beautiful day and another day of this darn cold. we made biscuits and eggs for breakfast and azalea and i took a walk to the farmers market. ashford had his friend starryn's 10th birthday party at a trampoline park. he goes to more birthday parties than any kid i've ever met. ha! azalea had a soccer game in the afternoon and they won 3-1!

the rest of the day was spent on the deck because it was in the upper 60s. we made turkey burgers for dinner and watched the last episodes of season 6 of young sheldon. now we have to wait for the final season to come to netflix.

we have another busy week of baseball games, karate, and friends coming into town next weekend. good thing i'm feeling almost better!
