january wrap up: sick days, more orthodontist, friend reunion

well...the first half of january flew by, but the second half (and especially the last week) dragggggged on. but we've (nearly) made it.

last monday azalea stayed home from school with a sore throat and cough. no fever or any other symptoms. i took this picture of the sunset on monday evening. it was a really pretty one (and taken after 5pm, which is always an exciting milestone in the winter).

tuesday morning azalea seemed better, so we sent her to school. ashford and i were out the door dark and early for another orthodontist appt. they gave us a tutorial on the scanning device but agreed that it can be challenging to get the images with a small mouth like his. they said the images are helpful for the orthodontist, but not required, so we should just do the best we can. at least some of the pressure is off.

later tuesday, i got to have lunch with vanessa, heather, and our friend teresa who recently moved back to seattle with her family after 5 years of living in the philippines. we hadn't seen her in 3 years. in fact, the last time we saw her was january 24th, 2020 not long before the pandemic and she was telling us about the restrictions that were happening in asia. i remember at the time thinking 'wow, i'm so glad we live here and aren't having to deal with that.' little did i know our lives would also be turned upside down in a few short weeks. it was so nice to catch up with her and i'm excited we are in the same city again. she was one of the first friends i met here in the summer of 2015.

wednesday morning azalea woke up feeling crummier than tuesday, so we kept her home again. i hope we can get rid of all the sick germs in our house before we travel to florida in february. i gave her a covid test just in case - that was negative, thankfully. wednesday evening i went to a pta meeting at school. azalea and simone showed up in the powerpoint presentation, which was fun :)

thursday azalea woke up feeling miserable. and she had a fever. siiiigh. i kept her home and made a doctor's appointment for her. at the appointment they did a strep test, which came back negative. her temperature was 101 while we were there. they said it was probably "just a virus" but i knew she couldn't go to school the rest of the week, which meant she had to miss her winter enrichment cooking class on friday :(

we finally made it to friday. azalea seemed a lot better. no fever anymore, but home for another day of rest. thatcher worked from home and i was able to get to the gym for the first time all week. it felt good. we did take out burgers and shakes from 'lil woody's' for dinner and finished up another season of 'alone.'

we went into the weekend with no plans, which was probably for the best, but it just made a long week feel even longer. saturday morning we slept in-ish. i went to the grocery store and otherwise we just relaxed at home. we made home made pizza/calzones for dinner. (azalea missed making calzones in her class on friday).

after dinner i met up with my friend beth at the sunset tavern in our neighborhood. it was nice to catch up with her (and get out of the house for a while!).

sunday morning we made biscuits and eggs for breakfast. ashford had a play date with arlo. they went to 7-11 and the school playground. i hung out with arlo's mom. we took it easy the rest of the day to make sure azalea was in good shape for school on monday.

since it's the end of january, i wanna document all the organizing/purging i accomplished this month. i went through all of our closets and (almost) all of our cabinets/drawers. i got rid of a lot of expired medicines & food, old makeup/beauty products i never use, clothes that the kids have outgrown, and clothes i no longer wear. i took 10 bags of stuff to goodwill (and i have 2 more bags already filled for next time). the holiday cards finally came down last week.

it feels like a very fresh monday today, with both kids back at school. 3 weeks from today we leave for florida and it can't come soon enough!
