hello 2023: the rest of winter break and hood canal cabin getaway

welcome to 2023. we are excited for a new year of making memories and watching the kids grow.

last monday night ashford had his friend arlo sleepover. arlo was out of town for his birthday party, so this was their 'makeup' celebration. the boys had fun and were in bed by 11pm, so it was a win-win. they also discovered they got matching black snuggly blankets for christmas :)

tuesday thatcher took azalea into the office with him for a half day and lunch.

ashford and i met kay, fritz, wyatt and wyatt's friend at flatstick pub in south lake union. we went there about a year ago with them. it has great food and the kids can play mini golf and other games, and kay and i got to catch up.

wednesday morning we ran some last minute errands and finished packing for our 4 night getaway to the hood canal. i love this tradition we have started during the week between christmas and the new year. we went to almost the same spot as last year. there's a group of 3 different properties owned by the same people and we were two cabins down from where we stayed last time. this one was a bit more modern and there was no snow this year, but it was still cozy.

thatcher took off work (i didn't since i work so few hours and it's easy enough to squeeze in). we plan super simple meals and fun snacks, watch movies, play board games, do a puzzle, read, sit by the fire and go in the hot tub. true relaxation is the goal. of course there's some boredom and bickering mixed in there, but i try not to focus on that. ;)

all the days were pretty much the same, so here's a series of photos:

on new year's eve day, we ventured out to a state park called 'dosewallips' to do a short hike. it was a really beautiful day after getting lots of rain.

after our hike, we had a late lunch at 'the tides family restaurant' back near the cabin in hoodsport. it's a funny little place where we got take out last year. the kids were determined to stay up until the new year so we filled the evening with hot tubbing, movies, a fire, snacks, and dick clark's rockin new years eve. at midnight there were some awesome fireworks just around the bend from us. we were in bed by 12:10 :)

on new years day, we packed up and cleaned the cabin and headed home. today is the kids' last day of their break and thatcher and i have the day off work too. i need to take down all my christmas stuff, which is my least favorite job in the world, but it's time. hope your new year is off to a good start!
