back to school, mer's 40th birthday on whidbey island

i'm feeling a bit discombobulated after being out of town two weekends in a row. normally january drags on, but i feel like it's flying by right now. no complaints on that front.

last tuesday was back to the normal school/work routine. i did some work, then met vanessa at goodwill and we grabbed coffee. at 11:25 i got an email (and a text and a call) that ashford's school needed to close for the rest of the day due to a partial electricity and HVAC outage. he had a whole 2.5 hours back at school from the break :) thankfully everything was fixed so school could resume again on wednesday. the rest of the week was uneventful. we had some really warm days in the 50's. now if only the sun would come out!

friday evening thatcher had plans, so i invited my friends kay & lynsey and their boys over for dinner. we had a bunch of appetizers and ordered pizza. it was a fun night.

saturday morning i was up early to hit the road for whidbey island (1.5 hours away) for my friend meredith's 40th birthday celebration. she invited 9 friends to stay at a house on the island and shop, go out to eat, enjoy the hot tub, etc. i opted to just go for 1 night instead of 2 since we were gone last weekend. it was my first time driving our car onto a ferry completely on my own. it felt like a big moment ;) i got to the house just in time for brunch. it was a huge house overlooking a lagoon.

i only knew about half the group, so lots of new faces. people got ready for the day and we headed out to coupeville, which is a fun little waterfront town i've been to a couple of times.

we went in some shops then picked up pastries from a bakery for lunch. i got a reuben croissant and it was so unique and delicious.

we decided to stop at a cidery overlooking the water. we got a bunch of flights to try and enjoyed our food.  here's the cute birthday girl with her special drink on the house:

we managed to get one group pic and it came out really nice!

after we got back, some of us went in the hot tub, which was very relaxing. :) the plan was to go back to coupeville for dinner, but every one decided we were just as happy to lounge around the house and eat the hodge podge of food that people brought for dinner. so that's what we did. i stayed up way past my bed time, but it was a fun night.

we got the VRBO all cleaned up and left whidbey in the late morning on sunday. heather, vanessa, and i stopped for lunch at an alehouse in mukilteo on the way home. the kids were so happy to see me when i got home (and vice versa). they had a fun weekend with thatcher. they met some friends at an arcade in 'frelard' and started a new season of 'alone'.

this week is pretty quiet and then we have a 3 day weekend coming up (we are staying put - ha!).
