thatcher in miami, grandma jan arrives, mother's day

i spent the first half of last week cleaning, running errands, and prepping for my mom's visit. i also volunteered in ashford's class twice. thatcher left for miami on a red eye last monday night for a conference planning meeting. he enjoyed seeing the city for the first time, and some thunderstorms from his 24th floor hotel room!

last week was teacher appreciation week. kay and i were in charge of "sweet treats" day in the teacher's lounge last thursday. second grade parents dropped off treats and we displayed nearly 100 messages that kids wrote for the teachers. it turned out so well! of course true teacher appreciation comes in the form of decent pay, benefits, and support, but it was nice to make them feel special in this small way.

my mom arrived last thursday. the kids and i picked her up at the airport. she came just in time for a cool, rainy stretch of weather, which was a bummer, but what can you do? we stopped for dinner on the way home at blue star tavern in wallingford. i had been there once before, but my mom and the kids hadn't. it was delicious and very quiet!

friday morning we got the kids off to school and my mom and i mostly hung out at home all day. i did a little work, prepped the crock pot for dinner, we watched "summer of soul" on disney+, and went for a walk once it stopped raining. thatcher flew back friday evening, so i drove to pick him up at the airport and the kids watched a movie with grandma.

saturday we hung out at home, took a trip to the library and the grocery store. all day we weren't sure if ashford's baseball game would happen because it was forecasted to rain, but it ended up being dry. he finally got to play after many rained out games (and one missed due to covid). my mom was happy to get to go.

that evening thatcher and i went out for a little date in our neighborhood. we had dinner at a new vietnamese place called 'krackle mi'. the food was so good! then we went to 'salt and straw' for ice cream after. i forgot to take pictures. oops.

sunday was mother's day! thatcher made us eggs, bacon, and biscuits for breakfast. the kids made me cute cards.

azalea had a soccer game down in south seattle (it's becoming a mother's day tradition). it ended up being nice weather, and again my mom was so happy to get to see her play. they lost their game, but that's ok.

when we got home, we relaxed for a while then i took my mom to 'cloudburst brewery' in our neighborhood. i had been wanting to take her since it opened. it's a really cute spot with great beer. it was a fun little date :)

we made arugula prosciutto pizza for dinner and thatcher made an angel food cake for dessert. we did not go hungry on mother's day! i'm so glad i got to spend the day with my mom, since that's not a given anymore, living across the country from her.

she's here for a few more days, so i'll have more updates from her visit next week :)
