oh wonder concert, field day, memorial day weekend

last monday night thatcher and i had a fun date night - we went to see a band called 'oh wonder' in concert. it's hard for me to believe, but he and i hadn't been to a concert together since 2015 (before we moved to seattle!). we used to go to concerts together all the time. my friend kay offered to watch the kids for us, which was so nice. we started the night with thai dinner at 'secret savory' in ballard then took the bus/light rail to the concert in SODO. we got there just a few minutes before the opening act. it was crowded, but not sold out. i would say about 40% of people (including us) were masked. thankfully they kept it cool in there. the show was fantastic! thatcher came across 'oh wonder' in 2016 and had me listen to them...it was love at first listen. they are a husband/wife duo from london. they were such fun performers. i had a giant smile on my face all night.

last week was an emotionally heavy week after hearing about the elementary school shooting in texas. it's the weirdest feeling to not be surprised that it happened again, yet unable to actually comprehend such a thing happening. it's hard not to feel helpless aside from donating to organizations like everytown and voting out politicians who continue to make it way too easy for people like this to get their hands on assault rifles. i know it goes beyond just gun laws, america is a country that fosters extreme hatred and misogyny, and glamorizes guns/violence. all of these issues need to be addressed, yet nothing is ever done on a federal level to even try to make it harder for people to get their hands on assault rifles. our kids deserve to feel safe at school. i hope this time will be different.

on a happier note, the kids got to have their first field day in 3 years (ashford's first ever!) on friday afternoon. i volunteered to run one of the activities with kay. we did the 'ping pong ball spoon race.' the kids had 28 activities to choose from and got different prizes for every 5, 10, 15 activities they completed. it was a beautiful afternoon and so fun to get to do this again.

after school, ashford's buddies fritz and arlo and their moms came over. the boys played and the moms had a little happy hour out on our deck. i'm so glad they got a nice day for field day because the rest of the weekend wasn't as nice.

we didn't have much planned for the long weekend, which is relaxing, but also kinda anticlimactic. it was in the 50's and rainy for a lot of the weekend, which made me feel extra jealous of people on social media in other parts of the country who were at lake cabins, swimming pools, and camping in the sunshine. on saturday ashford went to arlo's for a few hours. azalea and i went to the library. we ended up hanging out for a while at arlo's when we went to pick up ashford, which was fun. we got take out from 'uneeda burger' for dinner and watched a movie with the kids.

sunday morning we made pancakes, eggs, and bacon for breakfast. we ran a couple errands, but otherwise just hung out at home all day. lots of reading for me and screen time for the kids.

yesterday was memorial day. we picked monday to drive to a state park because it was supposed to be the only dry day of the weekend. we went to rasar state park, about 90 mins away near concrete, wa. we brought along hotdogs to grill, as well as sides and marshmallows to roast. it was a little chilly at lunch time, but not bad.

after lunch we went on a short hike. it was a beautiful state park. we want to go back and camp sometime.

now we have a 4 day work/school week with a baseball game for ashford, 6th grade night at azalea's new school, and a field trip for ashford. whew!
