january doldrums, a birthday party, suspicious symptoms

hello from the 837th day of january. i know i sound like a broken record, but man this month has felt long! between the gray days, early darkness at night (and no more christmas lights!), lots of covid cases at school, and not much on the calendar, i am so ready for this month to come to a close. on the upside, i'm reading my 5th book of the month and we are under a month away from our florida trip now, so i guess not all is lost :)

i don't have anything interesting to share from the work/school week last week. friday night we made BLTs for dinner and watched a movie. and enjoyed another pretty sunset - AFTER 5pm. woo!

saturday morning i took the kids to fred meyer to get a birthday gift for our friend ewan's party later in the day. they hosted the party in their backyard and it was only about 42 degrees out and shaded back there, so it was pretty chilly. we probably should have dressed warmer. but the kids had fun and vanessa put a lot of work into fun minecraft themed games and snacks.

this amazing cake was made by her friend melanie.

just realized my kids aren't even in this picture. ha!

we lounged around the rest of the day. in the evening we made pizza and then watched a movie. i think we've seen every netflix original kids movie ever made at this point. ;) sunday morning we made breakfast - popovers and eggs. ashford woke up a bit whiney and clingy. he felt hot to me, so i took his temp. it read 99.5. he said his head and eyes hurt and he was super tired. dun dun dunnnn. he spent most of the day laying on the couch. he of course had just enough energy to play video games for many hours. but he surprisingly slept for 1.5 hours in the afternoon, which hasn't happened in at least 5 years.

we tested him with a rapid test last night - it was negative. he woke up with a lot more energy today, his temp seems normal, but he's still congested. we will test him again tonight. i know the rapid tests don't always detect the new variant at first (or at all). i'm hoping he will be able to go back tomorrow or wednesday (assuming he doesn't have covid), but we'll have to wait and see. every one else in the house feels fine.

finally, it's my mom's birthday today and we can't wait for some fun in the sun with her next month :)
