hottest day in seattle, my 37th birthday, 4th of july

i left off last week telling you that monday (6/28) was forecasted to be the hottest day on record in seattle...and it was! we topped out at a mind boggling 108 degrees! the kids still had their first day of day camp despite the heat, but they kept them inside in the a/c or out in the sprinklers the whole day. they both had a great time, which was a relief because ashford was very anxious about going. not only did he have fun, but he asked me to pick them up as late as possible all week! thatcher went into his work (for the a/c) and i did my best to stay cool at home.

our house was still 90 degrees when we tried to go to sleep that night. it was absolutely sweltering.

the kids ended up sleeping on the floor in the living room and thatcher and i slept in our room. it was brutal and we were really missing the hotel room we had the previous night. oof. but the temperature dropped way down over night and it felt so much better in the morning.

tuesday was still hot (90 degrees), but nothing in comparison. the kids went to camp again. i had a lunch date with vanessa at kiss cafe near the locks. in the afternoon i did a little shopping before picking them up.

wednesday the temperature stayed in the 70s, which was amazing. i went to the gym, worked, and took a trip to goodwill while the kids were at camp. in the evening, i went to a brewery in our neighborhood with some mom friends from school. it's a new place called cloudburst and it was my first time there. it was a fun spot. we enjoyed some drinks and the food truck.

thursday morning i met 2 friends for coffee and a walk in our neighborhood after camp drop off. i also did lots of bookkeeping work (1st week of the month is always busy). we made pizza for dinner and i made myself a shrimp pesto pizza - so good!

friday was the last day of camp. i went to the gym, did some work, and got a manicure for my "birthday eve" :) the kids had the best week and they are signed up to go again in a couple weeks. i had not gotten that much time to myself since before covid, and it was such a treat!

we hung out at home friday night. we made dinner and watched a movie with the kids.

saturday i turned 37! i've actually thought i was 37 for the last few months, so it sort of feels like i gained some time :) thatcher made biscuits, eggs, and bacon for breakfast. yum! i got ready and met 5 girlfriends for lunch at stoneburner in ballard. we were in the direct sun the whole time and it was hot but we had such a good time. i'm so thankful for the friendships i've made here.

thatcher took the kids to the mall while i was at my lunch. they brought along their own money and he let them each pick out something to buy. ashford got a lego set and azalea got a barbie from claires :) we hung out at home for the rest of the afternoon. we got thai takeout for dinner and then had the pretty (and tasty!) funfetti cake that thatcher make from scratch.

the grand finale of my day was making my family watch my all-time favorite movie, father of the bride. the kids had never seen it.

sunday was the 4th! we hung around the house in the morning and picked up some groceries. in the afternoon we went to vanessa's house for a bbq. she also invited her friends melanie & dion, and their son ethan. they moved here from australia (and originally are from south africa and sri lanka) and vanessa's family is canadian, so we were the lone americans :) we had a really fun afternoon. matt grilled burgers and hot dogs, the kids played with water balloons and squirters, and melanie brought the most amazing cake for us. she has a side business doing baking. the weather was beautiful. we were there for 6 hours!

we were all tired, so we decided to skip fireworks this year. the city of seattle did not do their show for the second year in a row and while people in our neighborhood often put on a pretty good amateur show, they were really telling people not to shoot them off this year because of the hot, dry weather we've had. of course people don't listen to that ;) when we tried to get the kids to go to sleep around 9:45, it was booms for the next 45 minutes. ah well.

today thatcher and i have the day off work. the kids have their first swimming lesson in 2 years, so i'm excited for them to get back to it. they love going in water, but they haven't quite mastered the skill of swimming and it's so important to me that they do, so i know they will be safe.
