ringing in the new year on the oregon coast

hello 2021! i don't think i've ever been happier to see the calendar change to a new year than this year. i know nothing is actually different now that it's 2021, but we are moving in a new direction and it feels good.

we just returned from the most beautiful, relaxing 5 days on the oregon coast. we booked this VRBO back in september and at the time it felt so far away, but when the time came i was so happy we did it. the kids had all of last week off school for winter break, so it was really nice to get out of our house for a stretch. we drove down the coast starting in astoria, or. this is from cannon beach area.

we stopped at the tillamook creamery for the first time and bought way too many cheeses and goodies :)

it took us over 7 hours to get to the rental house (with stops). the house was right on the ocean and super cozy inside. we all loved it. we used the gas fireplace nonstop, went in the hot tub every day, watched the waves crash from the deck, and went up and down the 90 stair staircase multiple times to watch the tide come in. it rained almost the entire time we were there, but we didn't mind. we read books, the kids played their nintendo switch, and we did a 1000 piece puzzle.

on our second day, we drove an hour each way to salem (the capitol) because we had never been there. we got donuts at a bakery and drove around the downtown. on our 3rd day i went out by myself for a bit to the outlet mall that was just a mile from our house. we got take out the first 2 nights (pizza and thai) and made simple meals the rest of the time.

it's hard to tell but there was a 4 foot sea wall here that would stand on during high tide.

i think this was the only sunshine we got all week

on new years eve, we told the kids they could stay up til midnight (we've never let them before). they were thrilled! we made dinner and watched the ball drop in nyc at 9pm and then they watched 2 movies. we all barely made it til 12, we were in bed at 11:50 and waited 10 minutes to turn off the lights. ha!

this sea gull hung out on our deck all week (probably waiting for food). we named him albert :)

i'm so glad we could get away and relax for a few days. now it's back to school (at home). ;)
