city tournament, invisalign, portland weekend

last monday was durant and cheryl's last day in town. i took cheryl to goodwill (per our tradition) and otherwise we mostly hung out at home. which is one of my favorite activities this time of year when the house feels so cozy. we also brought out our angel chimes for the first time this season. another favorite part of christmas for me.

tuesday morning i took them to the airport. it was very busy there, which i wasn't expecting. i figured most thanksgiving travelers would back home by then. thankfully they had no trouble getting home.

wednesday azalea went to boys and girls club after school and ashford and i watched 'elf'. his request :) that evening azalea had her first game of the city tournament. the good news was, it was very close to our house, the bad news was, it was 35 degrees at game time. brrr. her team ended up losing 1-3, which was a bummer.

thursday i picked up azalea early from school for her big orthodontist appointment. she got her invisalign that she has to wear ~22 hours a day for ~20 months. ashford had invisalign a couple years ago, so we know the drill. her mouth is a little sore, but she is adjusting well.

friday ashford had sports club after school and then he went to arlo's for a couple hours, then both boys went to parents' night out at school. whew! thatcher worked from home and then he had his work holiday party in the late afternoon. azalea and i made dinner together and then she went to sisi's to watch a movie and i went to 'bakers' cocktail bar to meet my friend beth. i love the coziness and the drinks there, but man is it loud! two minutes after i took this picture, the bar filled up.

saturday morning we hit the road for an overnight in portland. we've been going down every december for the past few years to see family and friends, and it's become a fun tradition. it poured for most of our drive, which was less than ideal, but we made it. we stopped for lunch at DQ before heading to our friends ian, joanna, and kyla's house. we spent the afternoon catching up with them while the kids happily hung out in the basement. they made us chili for dinner, which was delicious. and scotcheroos for dessert. prime midwest meal! the only picture i took was of their cute kitty. oops!

after dinner we headed to our hotel and used the pool/hot tub for a little bit, then it was off to bed.

sunday morning we were up bright and early to meet our former minneapolis neighbors mike and michelle for coffee. they moved to portland 3-4 years ago. we happened to be in minneapolis at the same time as them over the summer and we agreed to meet up next time one of us was in each other's city. it was fun to catch up with them and hear about their life in portland.

we had some time to kill after that, so we drove to the pearl district and walked through a couple plaza parks, but it was damp and cold. then we met up with thatcher's cousin lloyd for lunch at a hand made noodle thai restaurant. we were supposed to go to thatcher's other cousin jade's house, but their family had something come up, so we'll catch them next time. our lunch with lloyd was fun.

we took advantage of being done earlier than we had planned on and headed back to seattle early since laundry and grocery shopping awaited us. it was a short and sweet trip and i'm glad we could make it happen. azalea had to miss her tournament game on sunday morning, but her team won, so they will continue this week. lots of fun stuff coming up!
