baseball begins, grandma cheryl & grandpa durant arrive, portland concert

we are in the middle of our visit from grandma cheryl and grandpa durant, but here's a look at the last week:

tuesday night ashford went to karate with arlo and rebekah.

wednesday morning i took a trip to costco with vanessa. always a thrill! :) i have been seeing these all over social media, so i had to get them. they did not disappoint!

in the evening, ashford had his first baseball practice of the season. i didn't mention it here, but he and his friends all got split up this season. only fritz is on the team they've all been on for the past three years and ashford and raleigh ended up on two other teams. ashford doesn't know anyone on his team and he's not thrilled about it (i don't blame him). i contacted the league to see why this happened and they said their number one priority is well-balanced teams and they can't move anyone around. i know that is important, but these boys are only ten and most of the reason they play at all is to be with their friends. so, it's been a huge bummer. i told ashford he needs to try it for a couple of weeks. his first practice went well (he said it was "fine" - i'll take it). the coach seems great and i'm hopeful that he will continue with it. now we just need it to warm up a bit!

durant and cheryl arrived on thursday afternoon while the kids were still in school. they came with me to pick up ashford. we hung out at our house the rest of the night and made dinner.

the duplos always come out when grandma is here.

on friday the kids went off to school and thatcher took his parents to our property and bellingham for the first time. they enjoyed checking it all out.

i went to the gym, worked, and did some stuff around the house. they got back in the evening and then we all went to 'mod pizza' for dinner.

saturday was a pretty rainy day. we thought about going downtown to pike place market and the waterfront, but it was just too wet out. ashford had a birthday party for his friend sebastian in the afternoon. thatcher and his parents went on a walk in the neighborhood and azalea and i went to the library and starbucks. in the evening, we made dinner and watched a movie.

sunday morning thatcher and i were up bright and early (more like dark and early because of daylight savings) to head to portland for the night. we bought concert tickets to see a musician we love named 'josiah and the bonnevilles' and it was perfect timing because thatcher's parents could stay with the kids. we got to portland at lunch time and went to a vietnamese restaurant. then we stopped by our friends ian and joanna's house to visit with them for a while. we checked into our hotel downtown and got a light dinner from whole foods to eat before the concert. the concert was at 'wonder ballroom' which is a really cool venue in a converted church. a couple days before the concert, i upgraded our tickets to include the pre-show meet and greet. we waited in line outside for a little bit to get in.

there were about 30 people there for the meet and greet. josiah came out and sang 3 songs for us. i sat on the floor with a few other women. ha!

then we waited in another line to meet josiah and take a picture. it was so fun to meet him after listening to his music and following him on social media the past few years. he's such a humble guy and seems genuinely in awe of how his career is starting to take off after so many years of being a musician.

the doors opened for every one else at 7pm, the opener (mon rovia) was at 8pm, and josiah didn't go on until 9pm. we decided to check out the balcony and found that there was limited seating up there, so we snagged a spot. it was so nice to not have to stand for all 5 hours that we were there. we were far from the stage, but the sound was great and we made friends with the people sitting near us.

i knew every song he played and (quietly) sang along. my cheeks hurt from smiling nonstop and i teared up during a couple songs. live music is always so special for me.

we got these fun lanyards for attending the meet and greet.

thatcher's parents took ashford to a playdate, hung out with azalea in ballard, and took both kids to 'the lockspot' for dinner. they also got them off to school in the morning.

we had to get up sort of early monday morning to drive back to seattle because thatcher had an afternoon meeting he couldn't miss. it was such a fun little adventure and i'm so thankful we could make it happen.
