a frozen week in seattle

day by day it feels like january is crawling along, but we're halfway through now! the meteorologists were hyping up the chance of snow here last week and it technically got cold enough to do that, but it stayed sunny and dry for the most part...though we did get a little dusting of ice pellets one afternoon. i know most of the country is in the middle of a deep freeze/snowstorm, so our weather is nothing crazy, but still rare for seattle.

a lot of the sidewalks look like this, but there is no real ice or snow

i've been wearing this minnesota twins winter hat i got from my brother and it feels really appropriate considering how much it felt like minnesota outside.

ashford went to karate with arlo on monday and wednesday night last week.

friday morning we woke up to 20 degrees (and a high of 23!). i haven't felt temps that cold in a long time. i did venture out to the gym (on foot), but otherwise hibernated the rest of the day. i'm already on my fourth book of the year. azalea had a sleepover at sisi's friday night and ashford, thatcher, and i hung out and watched a movie.

saturday morning we woke up to 17 degrees! i'm pretty sure that's the coldest temp we've ever felt in seattle in our 8.5 years here. our little electric heat boxes in our townhouse were definitely working overtime. we lounged at home in the morning. ashford's friend raleigh came over for the afternoon. azalea hung out with sisi's family all day. they went to fremont to see sisi perform with her music school band and went out for lunch. in the evening i dropped off ashford at vanessa's for ewan's 10th birthday party. he did not want to do the sleepover because he didn't really know the other boys, but he stayed for pizza + cake and a movie and had a good time.

sunday morning was still super cold, but the high was close to freezing, which felt good in comparison. ;) ashford went to arlos' for the afternoon and azalea and i went to the grocery store and library. more hibernation ensued for the afternoon.

monday was mlk day, so thatcher and the kids were off school/work. it's not a work holiday for me, but it's usually quiet with the banks closed. in the morning i met my friend beth for coffee at 'salt & sugar' in our neighborhood. arlo came over at lunch time and i took the kids to chipotle. we hung out at home for the rest of the day.
