last tuesday was our final day of summer break - and it was a busy one! ashford and i were out the door at 7:30 am to go to the orthodontist. he has just a couple more months left of invisalign now, which is exciting. the rest of the morning i worked and the kids lounged around. at lunch time, kay came by with fritz and arlo and we all walked down to 'thai thani' for lunch. it was delicious! then we immediately headed to the elementary school to meet their teacher/see the classroom. fritz, arlo, and ashford are all in the same class this year. it was fun to see their room and say hi to their teacher (who we already know from their older siblings having her). immediately after that (ha), vanessa and ewan came over to hang out. vanessa and i enjoyed sitting on the deck while the boys played. in the evening, azalea had soccer practice (are you tired yet?!). then we made dinner and got ready for school in the morning!
wednesday was the big day. we have a whole new schedule we've never encountered before, so it's going to take some time to adjust. the district changed ashford's school's start time to 7:55 am and azalea's is still at 8:55 am. i was wide awake at 6:15 before my alarm even went off because i was on high alert i guess ;) ashford was ready to go on time and we were able to take his picture before we went out the door.
last year he started walking to school on his own (the whole 1/2 block) but i wanted to go with him for the first day to say hi to other parents. he quickly found his buddies and ran off. we've come a long way with school drop offs in the last 4 years and it feels really good to be here.
when i got back it was time to make sure azalea was ready to go. we got her picture taken too. normally she walks to school with sisi, but sisi was sick for the first (and second) day :(
all day i kept checking the time because ashford's school day ends an hour earlier now. it felt so weird! i was able to fit in a lot during that time, even though i have one hour less of no kids in the house now. he had a good first day. we went to 7-11 after school for a treat and arlo came over. azalea got home over an hour later (which also felt weird). she had a great first day. ashford had karate in the evening and we caught up thatcher over dinner about the first day :)
the rest of their week was good too. i like that they start on a wednesday so they only have to do three days before the weekend to ease back into things. our extra-curricular calendar is busier than usual too. soccer practice is tuesday/thursday nights and karate is flexible (2 nights a week) but some nights we end up having both since we carpool with ashford's friends. whew!
on friday azalea went to her friend lilah's after school until after dinner. thatcher, ashford, and i hung out for the evening. i was so ready to do nothing after a hectic week. it was a beautiful night to sit out on the deck with my book and a glass of wine.
saturday we had no plans. we slept in (sort of...) and lounged around for the morning. azalea and i took a trip to the library and starbucks (that girl is obsessed with frappuccinos). ashford went to the park with friends. we made dinner and watched the new 'little mermaid' on streaming (azalea and i had already seen it in the theater).
sunday was busy. azalea had her first soccer game of the season in shoreline. being on the full-size field, with more girls felt really different! it was a hot day with no shade, which was hard on the players. but her team won 2-0. the girls have only been a team for a little over a week, but they are already playing so well together. it's fun to watch!
in the afternoon ashford had arlo's 10th birthday party. they went to 'portal' to do VR gaming. arlo's mom sent us this picture. love this group of dudes.
at dinner time, we decided to divide and conquer with separate outings (mostly because it's hard to get everyone to agree on where to go - ha). azalea and i went to crackle mi for vietnamese. and the boys went to mod pizza.
now onto week 2 of school!
