the end of the strike + the beginning of school

wow, a week ago feels like a distant memory at this point. so much has changed since then...

last monday fritz came over to play with ashford in the morning. after lunch, the kids and i met vanessa and ewan in magnolia for 'nutty squirrel' gelato and some playground time. we both checked our phones about 15x for any updates on school. ha! in the afternoon, azalea went to simone's for a sleepover. (might as well take advantage of no school, right?). thelonious came to our house to play with ashford and stayed for dinner. after he went home, thatcher and i watched a movie while ashford played video games. at 9pm, an email came in from the district saying they had reached a tentative agreement with the teachers union (yay!) and there would be a a vote tuesday morning on whether to end the strike.

tuesday morning i hung out at home with our "only" child ;) then i took him to fritz's for a play date. azalea spent a lot of the day at simone's, so i was able to get some stuff done around the house and go grocery shopping. it was another day of waiting to hear what was going to happen with school. finally at 5:15pm, an announcement was made that the first day of school would be wednesday morning! even though we knew it could happen that quickly, i think every one was a little caught off guard. we made sure clothes were picked out, lunches boxes on the counter, and backpacks were packed before heading off to bed that night.

wednesday we all woke up full of nerves and excitement. a new school for azalea and a new class for ashford will do that. we took the obligatory back to school picture :) 3rd and 6th grade! can't believe it.

azalea and simone walked to their new school together. they have to leave a little earlier than their brothers because it's a ~15 min walk.

i dropped off ashford at school. it feels so weird to only have one kid there now. i enjoyed my first day of our new schedule. i went to the gym, prepped a roast and veggies for the crock pot, did my bookkeeping work, had lunch, cleaned, and read a little. it flew by! ashford said he had a good day when i picked him up (such a relief), then he was off to fritz's for a playdate. azalea and simone walked back and ended up hanging out at simone's, so i basically had no kids home until dinner time. weird!

the rest of the week went smoothly as well. i'm so glad both of them are adjusting well. ashford has come a long way since kindergarten as far as independence with being at school and we're so proud of him. i wouldn't say he loves school, but he does great there. friday morning i had a costco date with vanessa. you know you're a middle-aged mom when that's your idea of a fun hang out spot. haha!

the kids hung out with their friends again after school. friday evening we made homemade pizzas and watched a movie.

saturday morning we mostly hung around the house. in the afternoon i took the kids to meet vanessa and ewan at 'full tilt' for ice cream and arcade games. second ice cream outing with them in a week - oops! ;) the kids had fun there as always.

in the evening, ashford's friend fritz came for a sleepover - ashford's first one! i took the kids to 'great state burger' for dinner, they played video games and watched a movie. the boys went to sleep a little after 11 and we didn't hear a peep from them until 8:30 am.

sunday morning we made waffles and bacon. fritz got picked up in the late morning. in the afternoon azalea had a soccer game. it was a beautiful day for it - 70 and sunny! they lost again, but they played hard.

ashford's friend arlo also came over in the afternoon. in the evening we made a new dish for dinner - kafta kebabs. they came out really good. and thatcher made us apple crisp for dessert so it was pretty much the best night ever :)
