swimming lessons, mini golf, cama beach cabins

we are back after a two night stay on camano island. last fall, thatcher booked this cabin for us because it's a popular spot that sells out quickly. the best part about camano island is that it's only an hour outside of seattle, but feels much more remote. but before i get to that, let's back up to last week...

the kids had their first swimming lesson in two years last week. they've had limited opportunities to swim during covid, so i was really happy to have snagged them two spots at a pool a couple miles away. the first class was last monday, even though it was the observed holiday. thatcher and i both had the day off work. the kids are still working on learning the different strokes and they are doing a great job. the group lessons are reduced capacity, so they are got a lot of time with the teachers. our friends fritz and wyatt were also doing classes at the same time, so i got to have a 30 minute pool-side hang out with kay each afternoon :)

tuesday after class, we met vanessa and ewan at mounger pool for more swimming. two pools in one day - the kids were thrilled!

the weather got really cool mid-week. lows in the 50s and highs barely reaching 70. we even got a little rain, which is much-needed this time of year to help prevent wildfires. we mostly hung out at home on wednesday with the exception of swim lessons. there was a lot of fighting and i definitely prefer being out and about with the kids, but they need downtime too.

thursday after swimming, we met our friends alison, eleanor, and callum at the mini golf place in interbay. the kids had fun and it was a great way to fill the afternoon.

friday was another two pool day :) last summer was the summer of golden gardens, this summer is the summer of mounger pool. i'm happy to do either, but i have to admit, not dragging a bunch of sand home is nice. friday was also "diving board day" at lessons. azalea was excited and ashford was not, but they both ended up doing it! in between lessons and mounger pool, we went to kay's backyard and the kids had popcicles. we spent the whole hour at mounger practicing swimming and i can really tell they are making progress. i'm hoping by the end of summer they will have it down.

saturday we ran a bunch of errands and prepped for our trip. the kids were being goofballs in the morning and asked me to take their picture.

they played outside all afternoon with the neighbors, which was a treat. our neighbors are renovating their house, so they haven't been living there for months. we went out for dinner as a family to uneeda burger in fremont. it's so nice to feel mostly safe doing this again. we always eat outside or indoors if it is well ventilated to the outside air, which was the case last night. i bet restaurants who have garage doors for walls are very happy with that decision.

sunday we hit the road for cama beach state park. we booked a cabin, but they are very rustic, so it was like packing for a camping trip, minus the tent. the cabin was really cute and right on the water. they were built in the 1930s and the entire resort was private until it was sold to the state in the 1980s. after we got settled, we sat outside and enjoyed the view.

for dinner we made carne asada tacos on the camping stove. so good! there are only a few fire pits in the whole resort, but there is a burn ban right now anyway, so we couldn't use them. the other downside of this resort is lots of large groups stay there. we were smack dab in the middle of about 10 cabins of people who all knew each other. they were nice enough :)

watching the sun set with my boy

the beds were not much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground (ha!), but that's ok. it was cool and foggy in the morning when we woke up. we made pancakes and bacon on the camping stove. and coffee and hot chocolate.

we hung out at the cabin for most of the day. in the afternoon we went on a short hike in the state park and checked out the other end of the beach.

for dinner that night we made pesto chicken pasta. yum! we missed having smores, but we had other dessert to enjoy.

tuesday morning we had breakfast outside again and spent the rest of the morning getting the cabin packed up and cleaned. before we had even left for this trip, thatcher booked us a cabin in the same place for october. we are excited to go back (and see what it's like in the fall).
