the kids had another great week at boys and girls club last week. they both had a friend in their class and got to go on some super cool field trips including matthews beach, a ride on a water taxi to west seattle, and remlinger farms. boys and girls club has been my sanity saver this summer and i'm so happy they love it as much as they do! i'm especially proud of ashford and how much progress he has made with being away from me. while they were there, i did my bookkeeping work, went to the gym, had coffee/lunch with a couple friends, and ran some essential (and non-essential) errands :)
we pretty much stay home most week nights and the evenings can feel sort of long after dinner, so i decided last tuesday night we should go on a walk to get ice cream. we went to salt and straw and it was delicious as always. i got one of the best flavors of my life - birthday cake with blackberry jam. the birthday cake part was a crumble mixed with vanilla ice cream and it was so so good. i'm still dreaming about it.
a cute story from our outing: azalea's cone was starting to fall apart in her hands and she was worried it was going to fall to the ground. before i knew it, ashford was rushing over to her with his bare hands positioned under it in case it fell. it was the sweetest thing i've witnessed in a while. it's nice to have reminders that they truly love each other despite all the fighting.
on our walk home i came across a book that's on my "to read" list in a free little library. i was ecstatic because i rarely find newly released books in those. made my day!
thursday my friend kay took me to lunch at a total gem of a restaurant that i didn't even know existed. it's called maggie's bluff marina cafe and it's in interbay near the cruise ship terminal, right on the water. it felt like we were on vacation. what a spot! i will definitely be back.
friday after camp wrapped up, i dropped off ashford at his buddy fritz's for a dinner/movie playdate for a few hours. thatcher and i decided to take azalea on her own special dinner date, her pick. of course she wanted thai, so we walked down to sen noodle bar in our neighborhood. it was so much fun to hang out with just her. i laughed that i couldn't think of a time since ashford has been born that the three of us were together alone. she's growing up so quickly!
after dinner, we walked to target to get a birthday gift for our family friend kyla in portland.
saturday morning we hit the road bright and early for portland. the drive can take a long time with summer traffic and it ended up being the case. we spent over 4 hours driving (instead of the normal 3), but we also stopped for a yummy bbq lunch about 45 minutes away from our friends' house. ian, joanna, and kyla are our friends from minnesota who moved out to portland 3 years ago.
kyla had about six friends over for her 10th birthday party in the afternoon. it was lego themed and they played some fun games, decorated glasses, and had cupcakes.
her dad works for a brewery and is also a home brewer, so i got to enjoy some of his creations. it was almost 90 degrees at the party, so we were sweating.
after the party, we grilled kabobs for dinner and hung out at their house for the rest of the evening. every one went to bed at 10 :) the kids were thrilled to get to have a sleepover.
in the morning thatcher and ian went out to get donuts for us, which we enjoyed with coffee in their yard.
we hung out for the rest of the morning, then ordered pizza for lunch before it was time to head back to seattle. the drive back was even longer - almost 5 hours with traffic. oof! totally worth it though. we hope they can come up to stay with us soon!
the kids have an afternoon day camp at the community center this week, which should be fun. and we leave for minneapolis in just 9 days. i can't believe it!
