14th anniversary, thatcher's birthday, camping on orcas island

june is always a big month of celebrations for us. our anniversary, thatcher's birthday, the end of the school year, father's day, etc. they all come bam-bam-bam for a couple weeks.

monday the kids had their annual well check up. they've both grown leaps and bounds over the past year. i'm alway thankful for "boring" doctor appointments. i know not to take them for granted and that life can change in an instant.

wednesday was thatcher's and my 14th wedding anniversary. (and 19 years together - wow). we had a pretty normal day of remote school and work. simone and thelonius came over to play with the kids all afternoon. i'm always looking for an excuse not to cook, so i decided we should all go out for dinner as a family to celebrate. we picked a thai restaurant in phinney ridge that we have gotten take out from before because it has a nice patio. it was a little chilly by the evening, but we had a nice meal. i know we will look back at the years our kids tagged along for anniversary dinners and smile :)

another sign of how long it's been since our wedding - our flower girl (who was 3 or 4 at the time) is graduating from high school. wow. we haven't seen her in many years. we asked her to be our flower girl because we were friends with her parents. :)

thursday was ashford's last baseball game of the season. they had a pizza party and gave out trophies before the game. i cannot adequately express how great of an experience baseball was for him. it was his first time playing on a team. he knew about half the kids to start and one of the dads did an amazing job coaching. he learned so much about baseball and he was happy to be there every time. it was so fun to see how much they improved from march-june. i'm already excited for next year, everyone's hope is to keep the team/coach together.

friday the kids missed school because we left in the morning for a weekend on orcas island. orcas is part of the san juans and we had not been there yet, so we were excited. thatcher booked a campsite in january because they fill up fast. we had a ferry reservation from anacortes (90 minutes north of seattle). the ferry ride was an hour long.

it was raining when we arrived on the island, so we drove around for a while and explored until it stopped. we camped at moran state park, which was incredibly beautiful. i kept saying the campsite looked like it was straight out of an REI ad.

the first night we made teriyaki pork, and veggies and pineapple in foil packets over the fire. we also had smores, of course. it was a little windy, but stayed dry. we all slept pretty well, despite being on the ground with thin pads ;)

saturday was thatcher's 39th birthday! in the morning we made pancakes and bacon for breakfast and drank coffee/hot chocolate.

the kids made thatcher some cards in the tent out of notebook paper :)

we headed out for a few hours to explore. we went to the town of eastsound and walked through the farmers market where the kids got ice cream.

we went in some stores. then we drove to the top of mount constitution to have a picnic lunch and look at the view. it did not disappoint.

we hung out at the campsite the rest of the day. we read and the kids played (and fought). for dinner we made hotdogs/chicken sausage and corn on the cob over the fire. thatcher planned a special birthday dessert: brownies with a graham cracker crust and then we roasted marshmallows to put on top. yum!

sleeping the second night was not as good. it rained heavily most of the night and though we didn't get wet, it was loud. it was still raining on sunday morning when we had to pack up the campsite, which is never a fun combination. but we survived! i laugh because even 3 years ago i was sort of "meh" about the idea of camping, but i love it now! we have more trips planned this summer and i can't wait!

we had a few hours to kill before our ferry reservation, so we did a short hike to see two waterfalls. they were beautiful and took almost no time to get to.

we got some brunch at an italian cafe in town, then we hopped on the ferry back to anacortes. it was a rainy journey home. seattle got a record amount of rain (for june) on sunday. i'm really looking forward to the return of summery weather, but it might be a few days. for now we'll be organizing our camping stuff and dreaming about our next trip.

today starts the last week of school. wow!
