on nostalgia
i think everyone becomes more nostalgic as they age. once you become an adult, the years start flying by and you reflect on all the phases of life that have passed. i'm sure the pandemic is partly fueling this for me (longing for times when life was simpler), but i feel like my nostalgia has been at an all time high lately. i'm constantly consuming media (music, pictures, shows, movies) from the 90s and early 2000s. but it all makes me so happy.
shows
about a year ago, thatcher and i started re-watching "boy meets world" on disney+. it's a cheesy, 90s sitcom that we both loved as kids, so it was a fun way to spend our evenings after the kids went to bed.
more recently i started re-watching dawson's creek on netflix. it was my all time favorite teenage show and it's so fun to watch it again as an adult. it brings me back to how emotionally wrapped up i got in the story line. ;)
the other night while thatcher and the kids were watching a star wars movie, i started watching the series "mad about you" from the 90s. i remember it being on when i was a kid, but i was way too young for it. but now i'm the same age as the characters and it's so fun to watch!
movies
my favorite movie of all time is father of the bride. most of my favorite christmas movies are from the 90s and early 2000s. if given the option to watch a new movie or something from decades ago, i take the old ones any day.
music
i usually listen to music while i work and decided a few weeks ago to make my way through the billboard charts from 2000-2005. it was a fun blast from the past. music has such a strong way of taking me back to very specific experiences. i also love listening to the music my parents listened to when i was a kid (james taylor, van morrison, the band, etc).
i was a huge fan of jason mraz during college. i spent countless hours listening to his music, memorizing the lyrics, and saw him in concert 3 or 4 times. he's had plenty of songs on the radio over the past 18 years but nothing compares to those early songs of his, many of which were not on the radio. i decided to listen to some of them the other day and now i've gone down the rabbit hole of his music.
live journal
i've mentioned on here before that i wrote a blog during college from 2002-2006. it still exists and got back and read it every few years. i'm in the process of doing that now and while a lot of it is cringey, i love having most of my college experience documented. i also love reading about things that i did with my dad that i had otherwise forgotten about.
i mostly wrote this for myelf, because it feels like a big part of my life right now. i wonder if 20 years from now i will still feel the same way about the 90s and early 2000s or if it will change to the 2010s or 2020s. i guess i will find out :)
