this week at home: whidbey island, mother's day, narnia

9 weeks down of staying home! except...last weekend we went the farthest from home we've been in two months. but we're still staying home for the most part ;)

the weather was absolutely amazing last weekend. warm, sunny, breezy. it felt so good! we spent lots of time outside soaking it up.

on saturday we drove to whidbey island (1.5 hours away) to celebrate mother's day. we went a day early to avoid the crowds, but i don't know if it made much of a difference. deception pass is a popular spot on the island so we purposely didn't stop there. we drove by and it was packed - and even worse on the way back. cars were bumper to bumper for miles. we went to ebey's landing instead. there were a fair amount of people there, but we parked down at the end where it wasn't crowded at all. we brought a picnic lunch, which was ate on the beach and then went for a walk. it was lovely!

before we left the island, we stopped at a cemetery from 1865 and looked around. the kids were really interested in it!

i was marveling about what a nice day we had: hardly any whining, fighting, or tantrums. then we got home and ashford was in a mood that turned into a big tantrum and azalea accidentally put her hand in dog poop on the boulevard. this sums up how i felt after all that:

sunday was mother's day! i got to sleep in (til 8) and thatcher made french toast and bacon for breakfast. yum! we had a nice, low key day. we cleaned the house, did a little moving prep, i got an iced coffee and went for a walk in the neighborhood, we made pulled pork in the crock pot and ate dinner outside. thatcher made an angel food cake with chocolate ganache frosting. i was a happy camper!

azalea has been reading the narnia series. we have seen all the movies, so thatcher got the book series and he and azalea have been reading it on their own and discussing the differences between the movies and books. we also stopped by azalea's classroom (outside the open window) to pick up her stuff from her desk and some projects from the school year. it was nice to see her teacher, but i hate that they have no real closure to the school year.

other than that, we're counting down to the end of "homeschool". 5 more weeks :/ still hoping to go to minnesota in august, but right now it's just "wait and see". planning to do more moving prep this weekend!

If she can handle narnia, has she started laura ingalls wilder? Those would probably be fun, with the minnesota connection. Happy belated mothers day!!
