summer sickness hits our house

well, this week did not go at all how i expected. always a nice little reminder that i don't have all the control. ha! remember how excited i was for my one week of the summer when both the kids had morning camps? well, ashford woke up monday morning with a 101 fever. i figured he would have a fever for a day or two and then head off to his camp for the rest of the week. but that was not how it panned out. thankfully azalea was able to go to her jewelry making class at the ballard community center each morning.

by tuesday afternoon his fever was 102-103 and he was miserable (despite having tylenol somewhat recently), so i called the Dr. and made an appointment. thatcher was worried about him, so he left work early and met us there. the Dr. said he probably had a virus and we should give it another couple days.

wednesday he was a little better. he was fever-free in the morning. i thought we were turning the corner. then the fever came back in the afternoon and he was miserable again. i felt so bad for him. the days were starting to get really long by this point. azalea was home in the afternoons, but we couldn't go anywhere so there was a lot of screen time and board games to pass the time. ashford barely napped all week. i couldn't figure out how it was possible, but that's my boy for you. we managed to make it to azalea's orthodontist check up in the afternoon, where she got a great report on the progress of her expander.

thursday was another fever-free morning. once again i thought we were turning the corner. and once again his fever returned in the afternoon and he was miserable. we gave him a lot of tylenol through out the week. on tuesday the Dr. had told us if he wasn't feeling better in a couple days, we could bring him in again. he was not doing well at all, so i made an appt for that afternoon. we saw a different doctor and she assured us that he had a virus and though it didn't feel like he was making any progress, he really was (with the fever-free mornings). she said we just have to be patient and wait it out. by then it was evident that ashford was not going to make it to any of the 5 day camp :( i called to see if they would take pity on me and give me a refund, and they did! so nice.

the nights were horrible all week. ashford would sleep for a couple hours and then be awake for 1.5-2 hours in the middle of the night, coughing or just unable to sleep. thatcher and i were so exhausted. friday morning he woke up with a fever (which was different from the last 2 mornings). he took a short nap in the morning and then the fever was gone until about 4pm when it made its return. thankfully friday night he slept pretty well.

saturday his fever stayed steady around 99 (never ending...right?). thatcher offered to stay home with him for the morning, so i took azalea to target to get some new school clothes/supplies. we've done this together the last couple years and i always look forward to it. but it's funny how we already disagree about clothing choices. she is very drawn to character apparel, and everything super flashy, bright, psychedelic. basically anything that is created solely for the purpose of getting kids' attention. know what i mean? it's possible that stuff is actually "her style", but i think she's just at an age where she is easily swayed by stuff like that. that said, i try not to micromanage what she wears too much. i veto anything that's too expensive, and try to steer her towards certain things that catch my eye. but at the end of day if she likes shirts and leggings that personally make me cringe, i still let her get them. because it's the right thing to do. it's just clothes after all.

this is her summer wear, unrelated to the stuff i mentioned above :)

thank goodness that school supply lists are pretty set in stone. haha. in the afternoon we walked to the library and got some new books and then stopped at java bean (and read said books), on the way back. it was really fun and relaxing!

we made thai meatballs for dinner and got a bunch stuff done around the house. it was a cool day on saturday and it felt like fall when i sat out on the patio that evening.

when sunday came around and ashford was fever free for the entire day, it felt monumental! he still has a nasty cough, but he's definitely getting better. we hung out at home in the morning and then ventured to south seattle in the afternoon. we took the kids to a playground in the mount baker neighborhood. we don't go to south seattle very often, so it always feels really exotic ;) in the evening we had dinner together and then thatcher headed off to meet up with a friend from minnesota who is moving to seattle this month. there have been a few in the last couple years, which is fun!

this week both kids have swimming lessons at the blue ridge pool. it's supposed to be nice weather. we are looking forward to it!
