kindergarten screening

over the weekend, azalea had her early childhood screening. it's something that is required of all kids before they can enter kindergarten, mostly to identify any areas where your child could potentially need extra services from the schools in the coming years. azalea won't start kindergarten until fall 2016, but they recommend doing the screen at this age. the only reason i knew about the screening process was from other parents who already have school-age kids. so i looked on the web site, and called the number to schedule the appointment.

the screening was held at a school a few miles from our house. we checked in, then waited in a room with a bunch of tables and toys (along with other families there for the same thing). they called azalea's name and she went back with the screening lady all by herself - which they recommend, so your child isn't distracted by you being there. the lady brought her back about 20 minutes later and then we had to sit around for a bit and wait for the nurse to call us back to go over her results. we met with the nurse in a private room and she told us azalea did a great job. the areas she scored the best in were identifying her letters and numbers, following directions, and rhyming. the biggest area she needs a little more work in is writing/drawing skills, which i knew. the nurse said she is well set for kindergarten, so that was nice to hear!

after the screening. i thought i'd stop and get my girl a treat on the way home (and coffee for me, duh!) :) we stopped at caribou and she picked out this red velvet cupcake, which surprised me because chocolate is her love language. but she insisted! of course she ate the whole thing. it was a fun morning with just her and me...something that doesn't happen all that often these days!

We need to do this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know how it worked in Minneapolis. I called once and left a message. I still need to call back and get it scheduled. How is it time for kindergarten screening already??!
