last monday evening ashford had his last practice of the regular season and his coaches made it a special event called 'pigeolympics' (his team is the pigeons). they set up a bunch of baseball-related events for the boys to compete in, including one called "anything but a bat" where they were supposed to bring a funny long item to hit a wiffle ball with. ashford brought a pool cue, but there were plenty of other creative items. they had prizes at the end based on how many points each kid scored.
tuesday evening ashford went to karate with arlo and rebekah.
wednesday evening ashford had a game. it was a beautiful 70 degree day. his team won 12-6 against a team from outside their league. it was a great game - ashford hit two singles.
thursday evening thatcher had a going-away happy hour for his boss, so i took the kids to mcdonald's for dinner and then ashford and i went to the field by our house to watch his friends raleigh and starryn's game.
friday was the annual moveathon fundraiser at ashford's school. it's the 3rd year they have held it, but my first time attending. i just went to the 4th grade time slot. it was so fun to watch!
the fun continued that evening with the annual syttende mai parade. i've written about it many times before, but it's for norwegian constitution day (may 17th) and it's a big deal in our traditionally nordic neighborhood. i invited rebekah and arlo, and kay, matt, and fritz over for snacks/drinks on our driveway an hour before the parade because the parade stages right on our street. we ran into lots of people we know, and it was so fun. then we headed a few blocks down the hill to the actual parade route and watched from there. there was lots more reuniting with friends whose kids are azalea's age but go to the other middle school.
saturday morning thatcher picked up donuts from a new shop in our neighborhood called 'dough joy.'
ashford had his belt test for karate. we all went to watch him go from yellow (gold) belt to yellow with a black stripe. he did great! they will get their new belts this week, then we are both going to be freezing their memberships for the next session (late may - late september) and taking the summer off.
in the afternoon we hung out at home. it rained for a lot of the day and we were waiting to see if ashford's baseball game would happen. they said the game was a go an hour before the start time. it was cold and still raining! thankfully by the start of the game, the rain let up. his team lost 6-8 to a team outside their league, but it was a great game and they played hard! azalea loved playing with her new little friend W, who is a cousin of one of ashford's teammates.
we came back after for frozen pizza and watched an episode of 'alone'.
i'm going to wrap up this post now because my mom is coming into town today!
