at the lake

if you missed my post from friday on my birthday and the 4th, click here to read it

we spent the last couple days of the long weekend doing one of my favorite activities of summer - hanging out at my best friend kelli's cabin. saturday was supposed to be hot and sunny, but apparently mother nature didn't get the sunny memo. it sprinkled on and off, and was otherwise overcast, but ended up being okay. at the cabin with us was kelli, her parents, her brother, her boyfriend jake, and my brother brandon.

we got our suits on soon after arriving and headed down to the water. not surprisingly, azalea was super excited about the idea of going in the lake, but not so much the reality. she barely got her legs wet before she was freaking out to get out. (followed by "go in the lake" "out" "go in the lake" "out", over and over and over). oof! we tried putting her on a floaty with me, so she wasn't in the water, but she hated that too.

she was much happier on land

she finally tired herself out enough to take a 2+ hour nap in the cabin and the adults got to relax a bit. thatcher really relaxed :)

there was some swimming and uno action in the late afternoon.

kelli's dad grilled up brats and hotdogs for dinner, then we decided to take the boat out for a little cruise. azalea seemed super excited once again, saying "go on the boat!" over and over. we got her on the boat, and hadn't even left the dock when she started freaking out. oh my word. the girl was so terrified! we thought maybe if we got moving, she would enjoy it, but no....it just got worse. i haven't heard her scream/cry that intensely for a while. oh azalea. :( so we swung back to shore and dropped her off with daddy. kelli, her mom, and brother and i set out for a nice little cruise around the lake. thatcher told me azalea cried the entire time i was gone saying "boat is scary" and "mama on the boat." poor girl. she was very happy to see that i returned safely. we ended up keeping her up until 10pm in hopes that she wouldn't wake up super early (yeah right - haha). she had a blast playing toys with viv.

azalea and i slept in a twin bed together, which was not the most restful night of sleep, but could have been worse. sunday morning she was awake by 6:30 (of course), so we tried to keep her quiet while everyone else slept. we took her on a little walk and played outside, then had brunch when everyone was awake. the sun was out and the temp was rising quickly, so we tried going in the water with her one more time, but it was the same story as the day before. by noon, thatcher and i were exhausted from chasing her all over ("in the house" "go outside" "go on the dock" "go in the water"), never getting to sit for 5 minutes, so we packed up and headed out. she napped for an hour on the ride home and then another 3+ hours when we got home. some one was worn out!

i realize this post makes the weekend sound sort of terrible. it wasn't, it was just challenging. it was another case of me having an idea in my head of how something would go with her, when i should know by now that's ridiculous to do when you have a toddler. i should have known she would be afraid of the lake and the boat, after all, it's been a year since we did either, why should i expect her to love it? most importantly, i need to get better about not dwelling on my disappointment.

You are such a good and patient mamma! Hopefully as she gets older she'll come to love the lake!

Cabin life is the best....sounds like a great time despite Azalea's fears of the water and boat.

I can totally see how cabin life with a toddler could be difficult. But I'm glad that you have such a good outlook on it! :) And someday, the "she was so scared of the water!" stories will be funny memories. :)

Oh life with a toddler. I swear they have multiple personalities some days! :) Sorry that things weren't as relaxing as you'd like. Before you know it, she's going to be running into the lake and wanting to go on boat rides constantly. She'll get there!

being at the lake is SO much MORE of a challenge with a toddler, but you learn to figure out what they like and you go with that. at least you dont have to worry about her wanting to be in or near the water all of the time and fearing that she will fall in and not be able to help! ahhhhh i REALLY need to learn how to swim! good thing aaron is a fish!
